'IL GATTOPARDO’ - the residency

A place where artists meet

Mission

To facilitate and support European artists to further develop their (artistic) skills in a residency in Liguria, Italy with a shared European heritage as a starting point.

The residency aims to offer participants, each with their own unique background and experience, the benefit of each other’s presence and contribution in close harmony with the unique natural environment the venue offers.

Purpose

Each artist, whether he or she be a painter, sculptor, performing artist, writer or philosopher, will work individually in his or her field of expertise (the focus).

The locus, a large restored farmhouse with individual and collective studios in Cairo Montenotte in Liguria in a rural and natural environment will allow participants to get inspired by nature and the natural environment for their individual work and will offer a backdrop for mutual collaboration.

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”

Vision

The wider Europe consists of some 44 countries, each with their own language and traditions. Despite this diversity, there is a communality in shared European values that dates back to the old Greek and Roman philosophers and artists. Some of this communality is reflected in artistic expressions over the centuries.

A large restored farmhouse in the hills of Liguria will offer the locus for individual artists, writers and musicians from across Europe to meet, work and collaborate in search of some of these values and in harmony with the natural environment. The residency will offer a venue where participants, individually and collectively, can foster their creative talents in an inspirational natural setting.

The Noveau Grand Tour

The Nouveau Grand Tour, (NGT) conceived and designed by the Institut français Italia (IFI)  and the Embassy of France in Italy, is an artistic residency project aimed at young European talents under the age of 30 and implemented throughout Italy through a network of partner institutions including il Gattopardo. This important artistic program promotes cultural dialogue and European values of exchange and sharing. This project inaugurates a contemporary form of the 18th-century tradition of the Grand Tour, which allowed the youth of Europe to travel from city to city to discover artistic heritage. This New Grand Tour will offer selected young artists the opportunity to be accompanied in their creative process, without production constraints, and in so doing to connect with various local cultural actors. Since its inception, the New Grand Tour has benefited from the support of the Franco-German Office for Youth (OFAJ) in dialogue with the Goethe Institut, thus enabling young German and French artists to be welcomed in residence throughout Italy. Ardian has supported the program since its first edition in 2022. In addition, from 2023, thanks to a collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Culture, France will host 50 young Italian artists each year in 25 partner residencies. In 2024, the Netherlands is participating in the program, allowing 20 young French artists to work in ten residencies in the Netherlands and 2 Dutch artists to work in two Italian residencies. This is made possible thanks to theEmbassy and Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Italy and the Mondriaan Fund. The Nouveau Grand Tour is a multidisciplinary program aimed at artists from all fields of creation: visual arts (painting, sculpture, photography, audiovisual, etc.), performing arts (theater, dance, circus, performance, music and sound creation), as well as CCI (fashion, design, architecture and landscape, gastronomy, crafts). For performing arts, some partners may welcome companies or collectives. The jury will be composed of leading European personalities from the world of culture. The final selection of artists will be made by representatives of each residency.
